From one night to a new start

NEWS  From one night to a new start

Published on April 9, 2026

A couple of months ago, we shared that our Partner Janine Heil had spent a night volunteering at the Winter Night Shelter run by Wycombe Homeless Connection.

Last week, a letter arrived from the team, and it offered a reminder of why that quiet, steady work matters so much.

One guest spoke about having considered building a shelter in the woods before finding his way to the night shelter. He now has a job, has received the keys to a safe home, and is beginning to talk about his hopes for the future. He described the shelter as having protected them from the dangers outside, which is a stark reflection of how unsafe life can be without somewhere secure to stay.

Another guest, in his late 70s, shared that without the shelter he would have been sleeping on the streets, on buses or on trains. He spoke about having his faith in human nature restored through the respect and care shown to him. During his time there, he was supported to attend medical appointments, given essentials, and continues to be helped as he looks for a permanent home.

When we talked about Janine’s night shift back in January, it was easy to focus on the practical detail. The hours, the routine, the quiet responsibility of being there while others slept. What this letter shows is what happens beyond that. A safe place to stay can be the start of something far more lasting. It creates the space for people to recover, to regroup, and to begin to move forward again.

We are incredibly proud of Janine for giving her time and care, and equally proud to support the ongoing work of Wycombe Homeless Connection and everyone involved in making it happen.
